A Gold Pillow End inset with Rubies

This finely worked gold pillow end represents a rare survival of luxury metalwork from the late period of the Champa Kingdom, a Hindu-Buddhist maritime polity that flourished along the central coast of present-day Vietnam. Fashioned from a thin sheet of hammered gold, the plaque is decorated in repoussé with dense geometric and vegetal motifs arranged in horizontal and diamond-shaped registers.

The surface is richly adorned with multiple cabochon rubies, each set within raised gold collars. These stones create a vibrant contrast against the warm gold ground and emphasize the object’s symmetry and rhythmic design. The slightly irregular edges and visible hammering marks attest to its hand-crafted production, characteristic of Southeast Asian goldsmithing traditions of the medieval period.
